These papers, 1798-1833, consist of letters and correspondence, financial records, legal papers, political papers, and estate records. The John Williams Walker Papers, 1798-1823, document primarily his activities in the development of Ala. statehood and his public life as a U.S. senator. Subjects discussed in his correspondence and letters include: U.S.--politics and government; U.S.--description and travel; Ala.--politics and government; Ala.--description and travel; and family and personal matters. Other subjects discussed include: Indian affairs; the Missouri Controversy, 1819-1820; proceedings of the Ala. legislature, 1819-1821; and crop conditions, marketing, and economics. Major correspondents include: Thomas G. Percy; Larkin Newby; Israel Pickens; LeRoy Pope; Charles Tait; Gen. John Coffee; Dr. Samuel Brown; William Wyatt Bibb; and Henry Hitchcock. The John Williams Walker Papers also include family letters and correspondence with James Sanders Walker, Maria Pope Percy, and Matilda Pope Walker on family, personal, and local community matters. Of particular interest are James Sanders Walker's descriptions of his travels to Texas in 1822. Within the Financial Records, Legal Records, and Political Papers subgroups of the John Williams Walker Papers, topics include financial obligations and agreements; power-of-attorney; Ala. Legislature resolutions to Congress; the Ala. Constitutional Convention; and the 1818 Ala. territorial census. The John Williams Walker Papers also include the estate records of Memorable Walker primarily concerned with the settlement of debts and business transactions of Memorable and James Sanders Walker. The Matilda Pope Walker Papers, 1810-1833, contain family letters and the estate records of John Williams Walker. Subjects discussed include: U.S.--description and travel; family and personal matters; and the death of John Williams Walker. Correspondents are Maria Pope Percy and John Williams Walker. The estate records document the settlement of the John Williams Walker estate. The Mary Jane Walker Papers, 1821-1824, contain family letters to John Williams and Matilda Pope Walker while she was attending the school of Mesdame Sigoigne near Philadelphia, Pa., between 1821-1824. Major subjects discussed include: U.S.--travel and description; family and personal matters; school studies; entertainment; and community affairs. The Walker Family Papers [Typed Transcripts], 1798-1833 consist of bound typed transcripts of originals in other subgroups. Not all of the original papers are transcribed. The subgroup has three series: Typed Transcripts, Chronological; Typed Transcripts, Alphabetical; and Typed Transcripts, Financial, Legal, and Estate Records. An index by correspondent and dates of their correspondence accompanies the transcripts.
